Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival Story Explained

Separate supported events and character relationships from interpretation, with spoiler-free context first. Covers Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival.

Event order, factions and canon placement for the October 8, 2026 release build, drawn from the published plot summary and the publisher canon statement. Full spoilers throughout. The two endings are broken down separately on the ending explained page.

Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival tells a new story inside the Hellraiser canon rather than retelling the 1987 film. Biker gang member Aidan Lynch opens the Genesis Configuration with his girlfriend Sunny, loses her to the Hell Priest's chains minutes later, and spends the rest of the campaign discovering that she agreed to that outcome before he ever touched the box.

What follows runs in the order the game presents its events. The first section covers the world the game assumes, so it is safe if you only want context; everything after it carries heavy spoilers.

Spoiler scope: this page explains the full plot, including the reveal and the final choice. If you are still playing, the story walkthrough keeps to objective order without the ending.

The world the game assumes

The game keeps the film series furniture and builds its own story on top of it. The Genesis Configuration is a puzzle box in the Lament Configuration tradition: solving it summons the Cenobites, extra-dimensional beings who treat pain and pleasure as one sensation.

Their dimension is the Labyrinth, ruled by a god-like entity called Leviathan. The game sends Aidan into that space rather than keeping the horror in the human world, which is why the middle of the story reads as a descent rather than an investigation.

How the story starts

Aidan and Sunny are together in the opening scene when she brings out the box. Using it draws the Cenobites, and the Hell Priest answers by summoning hooked chains that tear Sunny apart while Aidan is knocked unconscious.

That death is the engine of everything that follows. It is also not what it looks like: the game later establishes that the box was not an accident in the relationship, and that Sunny was the one who brought it in.

The Scarlet Church and the Rite of Rebirth

Aidan wakes as a prisoner of the Scarlet Church, a cult that worships Leviathan and the Cenobites. Marlowe leads it; Bruno acts as its prophet and artist. Their project is the Rite of Rebirth, which they believe will turn them into Cenobites.

The church wants the box back to run that rite. Bruno implants it in the chest of a woman he has been mutilating, Charlotte, who becomes a monster; in the chaos Aidan takes the box, kills Bruno and escapes.

Zora and the bargain for Sunny

On the run, Aidan meets Zora, an Eremite who keeps offering him advice across the rest of the game. Through her he summons the Hell Priest and makes the deal that drives the plot: the Priest will help him rescue Sunny, and Aidan will hand over his flesh when the time comes.

That debt is what the ending collects on. It is worth remembering the wording while you play, because the final choice is a direct answer to it.

The three hearts

Sunny returns as a living skeleton. To be fully restored she has to feed on the chosen, and Aidan spends the middle of the campaign gathering the flesh she needs.

  • Charlotte, the woman Bruno used as a vessel.
  • The Sister of Mercy.
  • Marlowe, the cult leader, taken after his own attempt at the rite fails.

The journey through the Labyrinth between those beats is also where the game fills in Aidan himself: a past of substance addiction, and a relationship with Sunny that looked idyllic from outside but was volatile and abusive in private.

The reveal: Sunny's deal and the box's real purpose

Marlowe forces Bruno to perform the Rite of Rebirth on him. It goes wrong in a specific way: the Hell Priest tells him he was never meant to ascend, and was an ingredient in the rite rather than its beneficiary. Marlowe turns into a hulking creature that Aidan puts down.

The larger reversal lands after that. Sunny admits she agreed from the start to carry and give birth to the Hell Priest in exchange for joining the Cenobites, and that she manipulated Aidan into resurrecting her. Her line is that they used each other.

The Genesis Configuration's real function is to identify a Revenant Mother: someone with a womb, enough will, and an emptiness that cannot be filled. Sunny was the candidate the box was looking for, which reframes the opening scene as the first step of her plan rather than a tragedy that happened to her.

Where this sits in the film series

The publisher positions the game as a new story inside Hellraiser's canon rather than an adaptation, and it is the first video game in the franchise. It is also only the second appearance of Pinhead outside the films, after the Dead by Daylight chapter.

The tone comes mostly from the 1987 original and its early sequels rather than the later direct-to-video entries. Doug Bradley, who played Pinhead in the first eight films, returns to voice him here, and franchise creator Clive Barker was consulted on the story from the start of development.

It is a Saber Interactive production built in Unreal Engine 5, with Emil Esov as game director. The ending explained page covers which of the two conclusions, if either, counts as canonical.

Who plays whom

The voice cast is credited rather than anonymous, which matters for a story page because the leads carry the reveal.

  • Aidan Lynch — Xalavier Nelson Jr.
  • Sunny (Yoon Sun-Hee) — Leader Looi
  • Pinhead / the Hell Priest — Doug Bradley

Sunny gets a dedicated character breakdown, including her full name and the objective that frees her, on the Sunny page.

Frequently asked questions

Is the game canon to the Hellraiser films?

The publisher presents it as a new story inside Hellraiser's canon, and it is the first video game in the franchise. It draws on the 1987 film and its early sequels rather than adapting any one of them.

Do I need to have seen the films first?

No. The plot stands on its own and introduces its own cast. Familiarity with the box, the Cenobites and Leviathan adds context but nothing in the story depends on it.

Is Sunny a victim or a villain?

The game resolves this explicitly: she agreed from the outset to become the Revenant Mother in exchange for joining the Cenobites, and she manipulated Aidan into bringing her back.

How long does the story take?

The publisher describes roughly 8 to 12 hours of gameplay. Breakdowns by playstyle are on the how long to beat page.
